For some reason, I have stupid ass songs going through my head. I.E.: "The Lama" song, "Banana Phone" "Song That Never Ends". Kill me?

I'm here. That's all I am, is here. We've got 4 more classes after tonight, and I've got to read 4 more books by Sunday night, research for a thematic unit, & do a powerpoint presentation. Argh. I just hope I can get through.

I've been surfing the web trying to find the "perfect" spot for our next vacation. So, the places I found are a room in a Bavarian Castle and a place 5 minutes from the Rhine River. Looking at the places, they're nice. I've told Cliff that I can pay for the trip if he'll save the 'spending' money and help out with the bills. This trip is VERY important to me. This is the first trip that we've been on that I'm planning and that I really want to go on. Last time we went to Italy and it was so-so. I wanted to go to Greece but got vetoed. This time, I'm planning this trip from start to finish. Cliff has no say-so in what/where we're going. So first off we're going to stay in the Rhine with day trips to Cologne so I can get my Hard Rock stuff and just traipse around the German countryside. Then after a week, it's off to the Bavarian Castle with day trips to Munich, Berlin (SABS!) and other places. I've gotta get my Hard Rock stuff. Hmm I collect Smurf figurines and they're made in Germany. I'm hoping that maybe we can tour the factory that makes them. I know that may be a little much to ask right now but hey. I can hope right?

So we'll be in Germany for about 3 weeks. Not enough time to really do anything, but enough time to get a taste. Cliff and I try to go to Europe every 2 years to a different country. So far, it's worked out rather nicely and we're enjoying it. I think that my work doesn't like the fact that I'm going to Europe but they can suck it.

I'm adoring this class that I'm taking right now. I've only had to buy 3 books and I'm super happy. The books I get to read: "Surviving the Applewhites", "Sounder" Neil Gaiman, Elizabeth George Speare, E.L. Koingsburg, Lloyd Alexander, "The Cat Ate My Pajamas", "The Watchman", "Hatchet", "Gambit", Choose Your Own Adventure, "Janitor's Son" and some others. Can you believe that I'm getting credit to read? I'm going to attempt to read "MOMO" in German for this one.

I was in a local book store this afternoon and they've already got the summer reading lists out. Here were some of the books/authors that were on the summer reading list:

Terry Pratchett
Fahrenheit 451
1984
Animal Farm
The Bell Jar
The Ender's Game
Ernest Hemingway
Tuesdays with Morrie
Lolita
To Kill a Mockingbird
John Steinbeck
1776
Hitchhiker's Guide

These are just a few that are on the reading lists. I'm VERY surprised/shocked by some of the required books. These books have been on the banned book lists for so damn long that I'd honestly thought that most people had forgotten them. I called Cliff in the middle of the store to share my shock. His take is that most teachers are our generation and they're making kids read what THEY like. I've read all these books. They're fantastic books and kids SHOULD read them. It just amazes me that we're getting away with having kids read these books now.

What happens if some kid reads "1984" and thinks that Big Brother is getting to big now? What happens with a kid reads Fahrenheit 451 and realizes that it's bad to ban reading books. Oh good golly gee willikers Mr. Wilson. What do we do then? Eh gads. What DO we do when a student/child gets an idea in his/her head that he/she needs to THINK and not be a sheep. Where are we going to be then? *please read the sarcasm that is intended for this section. Please*

I think it's wonderful that these are on the summer reading lists. It's bloody fantastic. Maybe now we're going to start re-evaluating the banned books and the lists and take some of them off. Here's a couple of lists for banned books/authors:

Any thoughts?

I'm exhausted and I really need to sleep. I work up at 3:30 this morning thinking I had to go to work. Not cool. I need a holiday. So, the group is thinking about getting together in Austin in October. I'm going to have to see how much I can save between now and then and how much a plane ticket is going to cost :( I hope I can go. I really do. It'd be fun to meet everybody from the group. Well, my happy ass is off to bed and HOPEFULLY sleep tonight.
